Horatio NELSON (1758–1805), British admiral, victor at Aboukir and Trafalgar. L.S., aboard the Agamemnon, Genoa quay, 18 July 1795, to Francis DRAKE; 1½ pages, folio size; in English. Nelson attempts to form an alliance with the Austrians in the face of the French advance. Cooperation between His Majesty’s squadron under his command and the allied army under the command of General de Vins must be aimed, above all, at bringing trade between Genoa, France and the strongholds occupied by the French armies to a complete halt; but Admiral Hotham’s orders run counter to his plans, and Nelson asks Drake to write to him and persuade him of the necessity of halting all trade between Genoa and France, and even Ventimiglia, for if a Genoese vessel enters Ventimiglia, nothing will be able to prevent it from proceeding to Nice and the French ports; he therefore believes that vigorous measures are required, and, if Drake tells him that, in the service of His Majesty, he must halt this trade between the neutral powers and France, he will issue orders to that effect to the squadron under his command: ‘If Your Excellency will tell me that it is for the benefit of His Majesty’s service, […] that I should stop all trade between the neutral powers and France and places occupied by the French army, considering Ventimiglia to be in that situation, I will give proper directions to the squadron under my command for that purpose’…
