Claude-Joseph ROUGET DE LISLE (1760–1836). Autograph POEM, *Le bain de Rosette*, a pastourelle; 4 folio pages. This long poem by the author of *La Marseillaise* comprises 11 octaves; it features a correction in the ninth line, and a marginal note referring to La Vallière (‘a small river in the Jura’). ‘The other evening, in my own way, Dreaming without dreaming of anything, On the banks of the Vallière, I was walking my dog, whistling as I went. The clear sky, the green foliage, The flowers, the water, the zephyr, All spoke the sweet language Of love and pleasure’... The poet discovers some abandoned clothes and catches sight of Rosette bathing naked in the river. The end of the poem is rather risqué...
