The King has decided ‘that in future no non-commissioned officer or soldier shall be entitled to seniority leave dating from any day other than that of their arrival in the colony’. This decision must be communicated ‘to the various commanders of the units stationed at Pondicherry’. This is likely to give rise to objections from men who have served at Lorient and on the Île de Ré; ‘the King’s intention is that this period should be counted towards their service record and seniority only’. It will therefore be necessary for ‘the Major, as recruits arrive for the Regiment, to note on the register the date of their arrival in the colony and the name of the ship, in order to avoid any dispute.
