Gabriel de SARTINE (1729–1801), Minister of the Navy. L.S., Versailles, 8 September 1776, to Jean LAW de LAURISTON, Governor of the Indies; 1 folio page. The King has decided ‘that in future no non-commissioned officer or soldier shall be entitled to seniority leave dating from any day other than that of their arrival in the colony’. This decision must be communicated ‘to the various commanders of the units stationed at Pondicherry’. This is likely to give rise to objections from men who have served at Lorient and on the Île de Ré; ‘the King’s intention is that this period should be counted towards their service record and seniority only’.
