Description
Celestino SFONDRATI (1644–1696). *Innocentia Vindicata*, in which it is demonstrated, by most weighty arguments drawn from St Thomas, that the Angelic Doctor held and wrote in favour of the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God (Printed by the same Monastery of St Gall, St Gallen 1695); folio, [4 ff.]–119 pp. and [47 ff.] (frontispiece missing), full fawn calfskin, ribbed spine decorated with gilded panels, gilded fillets with fleurons at the corners on the covers (contemporary binding; scuffs on the binding, marginal tears on a few folios) First edition of this treatise on the Immaculate Conception, based on the theology of Thomas Aquinas, published by the Abbey of St Gall. The work is dedicated to Cosimo III de’ Medici. It is divided into two parts; the second, entitled *Symbolica*, consists of a series of 46 remarkable plates of emblems engraved after Gabriel Ehinger (1652–1736), a painter and engraver from Augsburg. Celestino SFONDRATI, cardinal and prince-abbot of St Gallen, grand-nephew of Pope Gregory XIV, was a staunch opponent of Gallicanism and Jansenism.
