Pierre-André, bailiff of SUFFREN (1726–1788), sailor. L.S. ‘Le Chev de Suffren’, Trinquemalle [Trinquemalay], 12 September [1782]; 1 page, in-4. He received ‘on the convoy a quantity of supplies for the army’, but he is too busy to send them to his correspondent; ‘enclosed with this is the precarious state in which the army finds itself, for it is said that it is not without concern regarding Mr COOK’s advance; were it not for the situation in which I find myself—and of which I have informed Count d’Hoffelize—I would have set off at once. Given the late stage of the season, I shall only go there to the extent that it is absolutely necessary.
