Thérésa Cabarrus, Madame TALLIEN (1773–1835). A letter signed at the top, [September 1794] to ROUGET DE LISLE, 1 page, in-8. Following the attempted assassination of Tallien (9 September 1794). ‘Citizen Cabarrus thanks Citizen de Lisle a thousand times’ for sending a ‘collection of ballads’ which ‘will be studied with great enthusiasm. The assassination of Tallien may have disrupted the famous plans, but Citizen Cabarrus urges Citizen de Lisle to remember that ‘caution is the virtue of the wise’. She asks him ‘to excuse her indecipherable scrawl, for which the people’s orator, Fréron, is to blame’.
