Tarnished capsule and soiled label Spanning just three thousand hectares of vineyards, the Rheingau is certainly one of Germany’s smallest wine-growing regions. But here, where the Rhine carves through mighty rock formations whose steep slopes have been planted with vines since the end of antiquity, lies the home of the Rheingau wines; a classic shrouded in the myths of the wine world. The Rheingau is one of the birthplaces of Riesling, which is arguably the most expressive and sublime of white grape varieties.   The region resembles the Wachau: an extremely romantic cultural landscape. Here, Riesling develops its unique character, thanks to the combination of the riverine climate and the region’s rocky subsoil, composed of slate, quartzite, marl, loam and loess.   The finest and most prized white wines have been produced here since the 18th century. The first vineyard planted exclusively with Riesling was cultivated at Schloss Johannisberg in the 18th century. During the same century, in 1775, the Spätlese – a new type of fine wine – was also discovered. The Rheingau was also the scene of the revival of fine Riesling in the 1980s.
