Description
CHINA, set of 20 teacups and saucers decorated with a lakeside landscape in overglaze iron-red and gold on ‘Nanking Cargo’ porcelain, 1750. All bear the same number, 5195, on the reverse. H. 3.3 cm (cups) Diam. 7.6 cm (cups) Diam. 11.6 cm (saucers) The Nanking Cargo 28 April–2 May 1986 Five hundred similar teabowls and saucers featuring the ‘Imari Pavilion’ pattern, painted with a double-roofed pavilion on the slope of a riverbank, a leafy tree overhanging at the back and two rocky outcrops sloping down to the water, a smaller island on the left, beneath a band of trellis pattern at the rim, circa 1750; the teabowls 7.5 cm, the saucers 11.5 cm (Cat. CHAM, p.240). Some cups and saucers have chips to the rim, including two with cracks. The plates and bowls are marked with lot number 5195 from the Christie’s Nanking Cargo sale.
