Bodil KJAER (1932), ‘901’ model desk, for E. Pedersen & Son, designed in 1959. Chrome-plated metal, rosewood veneer. H. 73 x 185 x 93 cm Restored wooden top and a restored key. Label lost during the restoration of the wood. In 1959, at the age of just thirty-seven, the Danish designer and architect Bodil Kjær designed this desk for the cabinetmaker E. Pedersen & Søn. Rather than designing a simple piece of furniture, she conceived a fully-fledged workstation: a wide top rests on two U-shaped legs, set slightly back from the corners, allowing the desk to be placed in the centre of a room and to be approached from any direction. With no back panel, it is designed to be viewed and used from all angles. Years later, this radically modern design gave it an unexpected second life on the big screen. Set designer Ken Adam incorporated it into several James Bond settings: it can be seen, notably, in Blofeld’s lair in *From Russia with Love* (1963), at Tiger Tanaka’s home in *You Only Live Twice* (1967), in Bond’s room at Piz Gloria in *On Her Majesty’s Secret Service* (1969), and then at Kananga’s in *Live and Let Die* (1973). Having appeared in four films over the course of ten years, the desk became an integral part of the Bond aesthetic and earned the nickname “James Bond Desk”. Today, this iconic piece of Danish design is being reissued by Karakter in Copenhagen.
