Description
Josep LLORENS ARTIGAS (1892–1980), Ovoid ceramic stoneware vase with a blue glaze. Signed and dated 1969 on the base. H. 18 cm Diam. 10 cm Josep Llorens Artigas (Barcelona, 1892–1980) was the ceramicist who introduced Miró to working with clay and fire. He had presented a paper at the Sorbonne on Egyptian pottery and its blue glazes, and had run a studio on Rue Blomet in Paris from 1924 onwards, as well as on Rue de Masson and Rue de Miró. Remaining faithful to slow, high-temperature firings and wood-fired kilns, he worked against the grain of modern techniques. Their collaboration, which began in 1944 with his first large vases, gained new momentum in 1953 at the Gallifa studio, north of Barcelona. Their collaboration is epitomised by the two ceramic walls at UNESCO in Paris, unveiled in 1958: 585 ceramic panels produced in Gallifa based on Miró’s compositions. This work earned Miró the Guggenheim International Award in 1958. They went on to create, in 1960, the large ceramic wall at Harvard.
