Gianni CELADA (1935), ‘Mongolfiera’ table lamp, for Fontana Arte, designed in 1968. In polished white glass and chrome-plated brass. H. 59 x 30 cm D. Ronchi, D. The “Mongolfiera” table lamp is a remarkable example of late 1960s Italian design, combining formal exploration, experimentation with materials and a certain playful spirit. As its name suggests, “Mongolfiera” — literally “hot-air balloon” — evokes the lightness and rounded shape of a balloon. The lamp’s silhouette is based on a particularly successful interplay between volume and transparency, giving the object an almost sculptural presence whilst retaining a great sense of visual lightness. The choice of glass, Fontana Arte’s signature material, allows light to become an integral part of the form.
