Konstantin GRCIC (1965), ‘Chair_One’ chair, for Magis. In white lacquered aluminium with legs in Natural or Glossy polished aluminium; made in Italy. H. 81.8 x 55 x 59 cm Seat depth 45 cm Shows signs of wear, with some loss of white lacquer in places. Its openwork die-cast aluminium shell represents a true industrial feat: Grcic assembles flat and triangular geometric surfaces to construct a three-dimensional form in which the material is retained only where structurally necessary. This radical economy of material gives it its almost architectural silhouette, which is instantly recognisable. It is a radical exploration of the very structure of a chair, rather than a pursuit of conventional or ‘Spartan’ comfort, as described by *Mad Paris*; *Chair_One* champions a structural approach to seating, transforming its shell into a veritable framework. Now one of Grcic’s classics, it is held in the collections of the Vitra Design Museum, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Brooklyn Museum.
