Pierre-Jules MÊNE (1810–1879), ‘The Tied-Up Dog’, bronze cast with a medallic patina, signed on the pedestal, posthumously cast. H. 24 x 30 cm The son of a metal turner, Pierre-Jules Mêne (Paris, 1810–1879) was one of the few sculptors of his time to have his own foundry, established as early as 1837. He thus controlled the entire process, from modelling to patination, which explains the remarkable precision of the casts produced in his workshop. Ernest Gambart began exhibiting his work in London as early as 1849; during the Second Empire, his dogs, horses and stags became the most sought-after animal bronzes for bourgeois interiors. On Mêne’s death in 1879, his son-in-law Auguste Cain continued to run the workshop and produce casts of his models. A significant number of these were subsequently taken over by Susse Frères, who produced posthumous casts bearing their own publisher’s marks. The distinction between an original cast from the Mêne workshop and a posthumous edition – which is decisive for the piece’s value – can be seen in the quality of the casting, the chiselling, the patina and any foundry or publisher’s marks.
