Description
Maurice SIMON (19th–20th centuries), “Captain of a mounted unit of the French Army, c. 1900”, oil on panel, signed lower left.
H. 36.2 x 24.2 cm (visible area)
The soldier is depicted in the characteristic uniform of the mounted arms of the French army under the Third Republic: a blue-grey dolman with black brandebourgs, madder-red collar and trousers, and an officer’s kepi. The three gold braids visible at the bottom of the sleeve indicate the rank of captain.
This uniform bears similarities to that of the Military Transport Corps in the late 19th century.
