Description
"World Map or Description of the Globe", engraved in Paris in 1752 by Gilles Robert de Vaugondy, the King’s official geographer. A depiction of the world in two hemispheres, showing the Eastern and Western hemispheres, embellished with Baroque cartouches and decorative elements featuring figures from antiquity, angels and cherubs. This map shows the routes taken by the explorers Anson, L’Aigle and the Marie, as well as Gailon. It also features a detailed network of rivers, mountain ranges and other topographical features, accompanied by the names of countries, major cities and important places. The east coast of New Zealand is still only very roughly mapped here. Australia, referred to as New Holland prior to Cook’s explorations, is shown with a hypothetical coastline extending from present-day Tasmania to New Guinea. H. 46.5 x 70 cm
