Description
FERRARI, RINO (1911–1986) X-13 Secret Agent, cover illustration for issue no. 18. Gouache on cardboard. Dimensions: 28.5 × 20.5 cm. Published by Imperia in 1967. Rino Ferrari, a painter, sculptor and illustrator, was born in 1911 in Lombardy. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, he began his career in 1938, in Fascist Italy, working with Cinecittà. From 1949, after settling in Paris, he embarked on a particularly prolific career in the press, first in Italy (La Domenica del Corriere), then in France (Radar, Rêves, Nous Deux, Mode de Paris, etc.), where he produced everything from cover and interior illustrations to comic strips and illustrations for children’s stories and novels. Between 1948 and 1978, he produced a considerable number of illustrations for the major series published by Imperia, including the following: Attack, Battler Britton, Buck Jones, Garry, X-13 Secret Agent, etc. Rino Ferrari remains, above all, an easel painter, renowned for the richness of his gouaches and his highly dynamic compositions, which precisely capture the moment of peak tension. His backgrounds are often characterised by scenes of chaos, explosions and flames, from which the hero emerges to restore order.
