Description
BOFA, GUS (1883–1968) The Conversation. Pastel on paper. Dimensions: 28.4 x 23.6 cm. Gus Bofa was undoubtedly one of the most influential illustrators of the first half of the 20th century and remains so to this day. A renowned poster artist in the 1910s, he was editor of the magazines *Le Rire* and *Le Sourire*, an influential literary critic for *Le Crapouillot*, and a friend and illustrator to his contemporaries. He narrowly escaped death during the Great War and spent several months in military hospitals, whilst drawing for *La Baïonnette* and the press. His first satirical book, *Chez les toubibs*, was followed by several masterpieces: *Malaises*, *Synthèses littéraires*, *La symphonie de la peur* and a prolific body of work featuring illustrations of his contemporaries and the great classics. He founded the Salon de l’Araignée in 1920 and became the leading figure among the finest illustrators of the interwar period. His work, regularly reprinted by Éditions Cornélius, has earned him the recognition of several generations of leading cartoonists, including Tardi, Blain, Blutch and Sfar, among many others. The works presented here for sale are reproduced in the catalogue of the Gus Bofa collection (Michel Lagarde Éditions, July 2023)
