Description
Bazaldúa, Oscar (born 1967)
El libro siniestro, no. 5, original cover illustration.
Gouache on paper. Dimensions: 40.2 x 32.2 cm.
El Libro Siniestro was launched in 1996 to represent the horror segment within the extensive catalogue of the Mexican publishers Toukan and Mango.
Their range at the time covered erotic comedy, Westerns, crime fiction, social commentary and even professional wrestling, in a spectrum strongly reminiscent of that of Elvifrance, the implicit model for these publications.
*El Libro Siniestro* remained centred on two major themes: satanic pacts and ghosts. These themes reflect profound aspects of Mexican culture: a constant connection with the dead and an omnipresent Christian moral code. Despite their varied production, these series featured talented artists, such as Bazaldúa and Luis Velázquez in Mexico, and Manara, Frollo, Magnus and Azpiri in Europe, whose covers and artwork now contribute to their
heritage value.
