Jesús Malverde is a legendary figure from the folklore of Sinaloa, Mexico. Nicknamed ‘the benevolent bandit’ or ‘the saint of the narcos’, he is said to have lived in the early 20th century as an outlaw who stole from the rich to help the poor. Although there is no solid historical evidence to prove his existence, he has become a popular symbol of protection for marginalised people, migrants, precarious workers… and, more recently, certain drug traffickers, which has further heightened his notoriety. His chapel in Culiacán still attracts many devotees.
