Asterix
The Soothsayer
India ink and graphite on paper for an illustration based on the cover of this album published in 1972 by Dargaud. Signed. The pencilling is by Albert Uderzo, the inking by a collaborator. Handwritten annotations in red pencil in the margin. Stamp "Dargaud SA Editeur". This second version may have been intended for a project connected with Dargaud or the newspaper Pilote. The original cover of this album was sold by Artcurial in April 2024 (catalogue no. 179). 33 x 39 cm.
In an interview, Albert Uderzo explained that he was very attached to this cover, precisely because of its strange and unusual atmosphere. René Goscinny had insisted that the appearance of Prolix (plates 2 and 3) should take place in such a heavy and sombre atmosphere. This image is a remarkable summary of the album: the Gauls - including Abraracourcix, who is renowned for his courage - are scared, which is a very rare occurrence for them; and the bard Assurancetourix has even taken refuge in the arms of Cetautomatix, which is even more unusual... It has to be said that the silhouette, as if coming out of a nightmare, which stands out on the threshold of the chief's house where the inhabitants of the village have gathered, is enough to seriously worry them. As for Asterix, he doesn't let himself be impressed by this shifty figure who has arrived under a stormy sky that had nothing to do with the wrath of the gods. He looks at the other Gauls with a smile that shows that their excessive and unjustified fear is something of a mockery.
