Description

Catherine Picq Ricard The Barbizon Woodland Watercolour 48 x 33 cm I keep sketchbooks whilst travelling and then paint the watercolours in my studio. I have developed a rapid working style. What I love about watercolour is the transparency and the element of risk. By utilising the interplay between water and pigments, with my brush on thick paper, anything can happen: an unexpected effect with a misty sky, or a halo because there was too much water – and it’s a disaster. I have to start all over again. I don’t control the water; I go with the flow: it seeps in and dries in a cycle that I observe and have come to understand. Painting outdoors is an opportunity, albeit one constrained by the sun as it moves across the sky throughout the day and by the clouds… I’m an amateur watercolourist and have been painting at the weekends for over 20 years, whilst working as a coach and mediator during the week.
