Description
Black lacquered wood and hard stone inlaid six-leaf folding screen, China, 20th century
Each leaf consists of three moulded reserves: square at the bottom, rectangular at the centre and round at the top. Each is decorated with finely carved and incised hardstone inlays of various household and scholarly objects (vases of peonies, chrysanthemums or plum blossoms, incense burners, musical instruments, scrolls, seals, pendants, board games, bitongs and brushes, and bowls of fruit). The uprights framing the reserves are decorated with a stylised dragon chi motif and red and gold lacquered foliage and scrolls. Various flowering branches and small medallions decorated with stylised flowers and lotus blossoms in gold lacquer dot the reverse of each panel. The hinge system consists of two metal rings and a hook, some of which are missing.
