Description
Peter CLODT von JÜRGENSBURG (1805-1867) [sculptor] Semen Loukyanovitch KHOROCHENINE (1864 - 1936) [modeler] The knight-guard Ian Strievskiy. Cast iron with patina. Kasli, 1900. Marked with the sculptor's signature on the terrace. Stamp of the foundry under the terrace with the year and the name of the modeller. H. 43 cm Terrace size: 16 x 35.5 cm The original of this sculpture was commissioned from Clodt in the 1830s by Nicholas I for the work table of his wife, Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, head of the Knights Guards regiment. Chestnut Middleton, an English stallion from the Imperial stables acquired in 1833, served as the model. At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, this sculpture was the subject of several cast-iron prints in Kasli. Bibliography: This sculpture does appear in Volume IV of Serge Pantchoulidzev's history of the regiment (p. 338) with the canonical name.
