Description
Ivory okimono depicting Liu Hai and small monkeys, China, 18th-19th century
The ivory is carved in the shape of a rock with holes and cavities, flanked by a gnarled old pine tree. Liu Hai, dressed in a large pleated coat, is standing next to the rock, holding a ligature of sapèques and trying to attract a three-legged toad hidden in a cavity. Around the tree are two small monkeys, one hidden at the top of the rock, and two birds. Remains of red and black polychromy and gilding. Beautiful patina (a few cracks).
H. 13.5 cm - PN. 583 g
