Description
Icon of the Crucifixion. Cyprus, 17th century.
Christ on the Cross, his body slightly twisted to the right. The bleeding from the hands and feet is clearly visible. He is surrounded by two thieves crucified on smaller crosses, the trio of crosses being of the trunk-beam-trunk type. On the left, the good thief is turned towards the Lord and his cross is also inclined towards Him, while on the right, the bad thief, who is probably already dead, is not turned towards Christ and is attacked by a black devil-headed bird of prey that has come to take away his soul. At the foot of the Cross, on the left are five women, including Mary, Mother of God, Mary Magdalene, Mary Cleophas and perhaps Mary Salome and Mary Jacobe? On the right are Saint John, the centurion Longin, another soldier carrying a rondache and five figures, one of whom is wearing a turban.
The inscription at the top is very damaged, but reads as follows: Η ΣΤΑΥΡΟΣΙΣ ΤΟΥ [ΚΥΡ ... ΟΝ] ΗΙΣΟΥ ΧΥ (The Crucifixion of [? Seigneur] Jésus Christ) with an Ο (omicron) instead of an Ω (omega) in the word crucifixion, a chiasmus in the two letters of Jesus' name (clumsy restoration?) and Christ abbreviated by the first and last letters. The words in square brackets are illegible, but could be "ΚΥΡΙΟΥ ΗΜΩΝ" (of Our Lord) with also a Ο instead of the Ω.

The plate was attacked by woodborers, but was disinsected at the Bibliothèque Nationale in December 1947, according to a label on the back. The paint layer shows some bumping and lifting. Restorations
