DUMAS fils (Alexandre) and LYNCH (Albert). *The Lady of the Camellias*. Illustrations by A. Lynch. A fine binding by Charles Meunier featuring two superb embossed leather panels, set into the covers, containing a first edition on Japanese paper with Lynch’s illustrations in 2 or 3 states, enriched with several states of the cover, 4 portraits of the author and a portrait of Marie Duplessis. Paris, Maison Quantin, 1886. In-4 (260x320 mm), blue morocco, spine with 4 broad raised bands outlined and framed by blind-stamped fillets extending onto the covers, embossed leather plaques inlaid on the covers, tinted green and ochre with gold highlights and signed "Ch. Meunier, 20" in the leather; the first depicting a butterfly and an allegory of Death crowned with pearls, whose hair wraps around two nude figures, kneeling on either side of a vase set upon a carpet of camellia leaves and flowers; the second depicting two doves flying amidst a setting of leaves and camellias, intersected by a bow and a quiver, within a frame set with leafy buds at the corners, wide inner border of the same morocco leather set with a frame of solid and dotted fillets, adorned with gilded flowers and mosaics of ecru morocco leather at the corners, linings and endpapers of brocaded silk with a multicoloured floral design on a blue background, double endpapers, gilt edges on endpapers, original illustrated covers preserved, half-morocco slipcase with a band, matching edged slipcase (Meunier, 1920). XIV and 247 pages, 41 illustrations by Albert Lynch, including 1 colour frontispiece etched by Gaujean, 10 separate etchings by Champollion and Massé and 30 heliogravure headpieces by Dumont in various tones. Spine very slightly faded, minimal rubbing at the top and on one edge, spine faded on the slipcase. A splendid edition of Alexandre Dumas fils’s first major success, illustrated with 41 works by the painter and illustrator Albert Lynch (1860–1950), including 11 full-page etchings by Gaujean, Champollion and Massé, and 30 large chapter headings in heliogravure. A deluxe limited edition of 130 numbered copies on Japanese paper, this being one of the first 30 (no. XIX), with the etchings in three states (pure etching on Japanese paper, final state prior to the letter and with a note on Japanese paper, with the letter on Dutch paper) and the heliogravures with an additional hors-texte state, on Japanese paper. It is further enriched with - 2 additional states of the original cover (in black and in colour), - 3 portraits of the author, including 1 etched portrait signed with the monogram of Henry Toussaint, presented in 3 states (including the pure etching and the state with a remark), 1 portrait by Burney and 1 portrait engraved by de Los Rios after Giraud, - 1 portrait of Marie Duplessis in heliogravure. A sumptuous binding executed in 1920 by Charles Meunier, adorned with two large symbolic compositions in repoussé leather on the covers, typical of the bookbinder regarded as the apostle of ‘emblematic’ bookbinding.
