Description
LOTI (Pierre). Ramuntcho.
An iconic work on the Basque Country, enhanced by a handwritten dedication from Loti, a signed map, and a signed photograph by Claude Farrère.
Paris, Calmann-Lévy, 1897.
One volume in-12 (188 × 124 mm). Navy blue half-maroquin with corner caps, double fillet on the covers, smooth spine adorned with an elegant embossed gold design. Gilded head. Covers (excluding the spine) preserved. (Binding by E. Pouget).
(8)-351 pages.
Slight rubbing to the edges, caps and corners. Yellowed paper.
First edition. Copy from the standard paper run, following 75 special edition copies on Holland paper.
Autographed copy signed "Monsieur Lehmann, Pierre Loti".
A novel of love and adventure set amongst Basque smugglers, it bears the name of its main character, the young and handsome hero Ramuntcho.
Despite the folkloric nature of its depiction of regional customs, the setting was inspired by the author’s discovery of his adopted homeland, where he died (in Hendaye in 1923).
An interesting copy preserved in a signed binding.
