Description
LARGUIER (Léo). Collection of two autograph poems – Advice to a Poet.
Manuscript by Léo Larguier containing two handwritten poems and a letter in the author’s own hand, in a fine binding by Henri Blanchetière.
No place, no publisher, no date.
Small quarto (195x255 mm), brown half-maroquin with cold-stamped corners, author’s name and title gilded lengthwise on a smooth spine, marbled paper endpapers and linings, gilt head (H. Blanchetière).
2 blank leaves, 13 handwritten leaves mounted (150x195 mm) and 2 blank leaves.
Minor scuffs and scratches on the leather.
A charming collection of two autograph poems by Léo Larguier (1878–1950), in beautiful black ink, perfectly legible. The first, entitled "Conseils à un Poëte", consists of 11 couplets in alexandrines; the second, signed by the author and titled "To a Poet (Fragment)", forms a long poem in three parts, the first two in alexandrines, the third in octosyllables. Here, Léo Larguier offers useful advice to any budding poet, encouraging them to free themselves from formal rules and follow their own inspiration: "What are rhyme and caesura And the hiatus in the infinite?" or "You, if the sacred spirit inspires you And if you know how to raise the lyre, Listen only to your own voice!"
The collection also contains a signed autograph letter from the poet to an unnamed recipient, whose address may correspond to 3 Rue Soufflot (?), discussing an upcoming visit to Rue de Lille to “chat” about a volume of verse, and mentioning the poet Jean Moréas, to whom Larguier plans to present the said volume for potential publication in his journal “La Minerve française” (1 double-sided sheet measuring 205x250 mm, folded in half and mounted on the flyleaf).
From the library of the poet and publisher Auguste Pierre Garnier (1885–1966), with his bookplate on the inside back cover.
A precious autograph collection by a brilliant and unjustly forgotten poet, beautifully compiled by Henri Blanchetière.
