Description
[ART AND TECHNIQUES]. HAUDICQUER DE BLANCOURT (Jean). On the art of glassmaking. In which one learns how to make glass, crystal, and enamel. How to make beads, precious stones, porcelain, and mirrors. The method of painting on glass and enamel. How to extract colours from metals, minerals, herbs and flowers. A work filled with many secrets and curiosities, unknown until now. A valuable account of the skills of glassmakers, enamellers and porcelain makers at the end of the 17th century, illustrated with plates revealing the techniques and tools of the trade. Paris, Jean Jombert, 1697. Volume in-12 (168 × 102 mm). Glazed tan calfskin, ribbed spine decorated with an elegant embossed gold design, speckled edges (contemporary binding). A fragment is missing from the head cap; corners rubbed. 8 unnumbered folios, 602 pp., 3 unnumbered folios, 8 plates. First edition dedicated to the Marquis de Villacerf, illustrated with 8 engraved plates, including one fold-out. This treatise on the art of glassmaking is by the genealogist and glassmaker-alchemist Jean Haudicquer de Blancourt (1650?–1704), known for having trafficked in forged titles of nobility. Although he presents his work as an original work, it is essentially a translation and continuation of the Arte Vetraria by the Italian master glassmaker Antonio Neri, published in 1612. Provenance: Baudot et Lamy, with handwritten bookplates on the title page. A fine copy, fresh and clean, with all plates intact.
