Description
BAUDELAIRE (Charles). *Artificial Paradises*. *Opium and Hashish*. Very rare first edition of Baudelaire’s study on the relationship between drugs and literary creation; a first-printing copy bearing the correct date of 1860 on the cover and title page. Paris, Poulet-Malassis et de Broise, 1860. In-12 (120x190 mm), paperback, cover printed in black. IV and 304 pages, a few engraved headbands, initials and footers, publisher’s mark in red on the title page, repeated on the original cover. Spine damaged with tears at the joints and losses to the cap bands, covers slightly browned. Rare first edition of this two-part essay, entitled ‘The Poem of Hashish’ and ‘An Opium Eater’, in which Baudelaire describes the effects of wine, opium and hashish on the human mind, drawing on his own experience and his reading of Thomas de Quincey’s Confessions of an English Opium-Eater (1822). A copy from the first printing with the cover and title page bearing the correct date of 1860. In good condition inside.
