A very fine copy of the first illustrated edition by François Courboin, one of the first 100 printed on Japanese paper with three additional states of the 40 etchings, in a splendid mosaic binding lined with Gruel. Paris, Théophile Belin, 1902. In-8 (160x230 mm), ecru morocco, wide floral lace and mosaic-patterned brown morocco bands framing the covers, the tricolour coat of arms of the City of Paris in the spandrel, filleted raised bands on the spine, similarly mosaic-patterned panels, gilded and mosaic flowers and garlands in the centre, full lining in the same ecru morocco, repeating the friezes, garland and mosaic violets in the framing, olive-coloured half-leather endpapers, gilt edges, covers and spine preserved (Gruel). 189 pages entirely mounted on tabs, 40 vignettes drawn and etched by François Courboin, including 1 frontispiece and 4 plates, a title vignette, headpieces, in-text illustrations and tailpieces. Minimal rubbing on the spine. First edition and first printing of the 40 etchings drawn and engraved by François Courboin, comprising 1 frontispiece, 4 plates and numerous headpieces, interior illustrations and tailpieces. Limited edition of 300 copies, this one being one of the first 100 on Japanese paper (No. 20), with three additional states of the etchings (pure etching, black state with remarks and green state with remarks). From the libraries of Robert Hoe and André E. Algazy, with their bookplates on the flyleaf. A fine copy, perfectly prepared by Léon Gruel (1841–1923).
