A remarkable copy from the library of the Duke of Massa, enriched with a pre-letterpress black-and-white suite and 19 plates of rejected proofs, in a sumptuous mosaic-bound and lined binding by Paul Affolter, bearing the combined coat of arms of the Duke of Massa and his wife Odette de Boutray.

In-4 (220x280 mm), navy blue morocco, covers stamped with the combined arms of the Massa and Boutray families within a double gilt border with gilt leaves and flowers, and ochre morocco mosaics at the corners, spine with 4 filleted false ribs, double gilt frame between the ribs with mosaic fleurons at the corners and in the centre of two panels, three mosaic ears of wheat in the central panel, double gilt fillet on the edges, linings of red ochre morocco leather with a border of three gold fillets and a green morocco leather band studded with ears of wheat inlaid with ochre morocco leather and interspersed with flowers inlaid with the same leather on a green background at the corners, signature "P. Affolter, 1925" in the leather, brocaded silk endpapers with white and ochre floral decoration on a black background, double endpapers, gilt edges on endpapers, covers and spine preserved, edged slipcase (P. Affolter, 1925).
259 pages, 53 compositions from life drawn and etched by Henri Jourdain, printed in colour using the block-printing process.
Minimal rubbing on the spine and one edge, tiny foxing in the margins of some of the rejected plates.
A charming edition of this account of Gustave Flaubert’s journey to Brittany in the company of Maxime Du Camp, illustrated with 53 watercolours engraved in colour by Henri Jourdain, including one insert, a title vignette and 51 in-text plates.
