Description
[BINDING FEATURING THE COAT OF ARMS OF AUGUSTUS III OF POLAND] - DAVILA (Henri Caterin). History of the Civil Wars of France, under the Reigns of Francis II, Charles IX, Henry III, & Henry IV. Translated from the Italian by Henri Caterin Davila. With Critical and Historical Notes, by the Reverend M***. Copy preserved in fine contemporary bindings bearing the arms of Augustus III (1696–1763), King of Poland, Grand Duke of Lithuania and Elector of Saxony. Amsterdam, published by Arkstée & Merkus, 1757 (M. DCC. LVII). Three volumes in-4 (265 x 214 mm). Full glazed and marbled tan calfskin, covers bearing the coat of arms embossed in gold with the monogram P.C. Spined back decorated with gilt fleurons, title labels in mahogany morocco, red edges. LXIV, 502 pp., VI, 579 pp., 617 pp. and 142 pp. Scuffing to the edges and corners, seven corners pierced, a few rare foxing spots. First edition of the French translation of this major work on the Wars of Religion in France. A very fine publication, with titles in red and black adorned with vignettes by Charles Eisen, engraved by Jacques Aliamet (Volume 1) and Noël Le Mire (Volumes 2 and 3). The text is embellished with copper-engraved headpieces and wood-engraved typographical ornaments. It should be noted that on the title page, M. DCC. LIV (1754) has been altered by covering the ‘LIV’ with a small printed paper label reading ‘LVII’, thereby changing the date from 1754 to 1757. The work includes a preface and a dedication to the Count of Clermont, Prince of the Blood. Rich in content, it offers both a history of the Wars of Religion in France, a political analysis and a chronicle of the actions of the main protagonists, not to mention the history of the League and its supporters. As the history of Henry IV and the struggles against the League members form a distinct section, the publisher has given it a separate pagination. Provenance: handwritten bookplate on the endpapers reading "Ed. Goguel". A very fine copy in its original binding bearing the coat of arms of Augustus III of Poland.
