Description
[CIRCUS]. LÉGER (Fernand). Circus.
An exceptional artist’s book in which Fernand Léger, fascinated by the flamboyant world of acrobats and clowns, gives free rein to his passion for the circus. A work entirely conceived by him — texts, manuscripts and illustrations — in which every page pulsates with the energy and geometry that made him famous.
Paris, Tériade, (printed by Mourlot), 1950.
Folio (423 x 320 mm). Unbound, with a folded illustrated cover and a double slipcase in cardboard and cloth.
Incomplete: 4 leaves including the half-title, from page 5 to 113 pp. 3 unnumbered leaves. Missing the double title leaf and the leaves for pages 41–42, 65–66 and 71–72.
A few very faint foxing spots and slight transfer marks opposite the lithographs.
First edition. Limited edition of 300 copies, all on Arches vellum paper; this copy is unnumbered and unsigned.
The illustrations comprise 59 (out of 63) lithographs by Fernand Léger, including 30 (out of 34) in colour.
