DIODORUS OF SICILY. The works of Diodorus of Sicily, the Greek historian, which are known to exist today.
A rare Basel edition of the works of Diodorus of Sicily, produced by the city’s very first printing house.
Basel (Basilæ), Heinrich Petri, 1531.
Folio (280 x 180 mm), brown marbled half-calf, ribbed spine with double fillet between the ribs, red edges.
13 unnumbered folios, 364 pages.
Binding generally rubbed, caps damaged, head joints split, slight water stain on the lower corner, slight water stain at the top.
Basel edition of Diodorus Siculus’s Historical Library, a vast universal history spanning from the beginning of the world to Julius Caesar. It is the product of what would become the ‘Basilea Officina Henricpetrina’, Basel’s very first printing house, founded in 1488 by Johannes Petri, the uncle of our publisher.
Handwritten inscriptions in ink in the margin: notes regarding chapter numbers, as well as the names of the islands described in the final section; and traces of pencil in the margin.
