Description
[MANUSCRIPT – MUSIC]. Collection of tunes and songs. An important 18th-century handwritten songbook, carefully calligraphied, containing both lyrics and musical scores, bound in an elegant contemporary morocco leather binding. Circa 1760–1780. Large 4to volume (320 x 248 mm). Full green morocco, lace edging on the covers, gilt bookplate ‘Mr de Caumartin’ on the front cover, plain spine richly decorated with a cloisonné design in small ironwork, gilt edges. Black ink, 205 pages preceded by an alphabetical table. Leather slightly faded, normal wear and tear, small tear at the top of one joint. Interior with loose quires, a few minor stains or marginal tears. On the spine, the volume number indicates Volume II. A precious collection of 76 pieces (romances, pastorals and gallant airs) characteristic of the taste for the ‘return to nature’ and gallantry during the reign of Louis XVI. At a time when music printing remained expensive, this manuscript bears witness to the common practice of private copying in aristocratic circles. Among the pieces listed: Lise, entends-tu l'orage... Un ingrat m'abandonne Vivatché, King of Kings But also: I saw in the village, Colin has charming eyes, A young boatwoman, A day in the woods, Colinette, What is it that stops you, I can’t take it any more, my heart is leaving me, No, I want to love only Colinetc, Tell me then, when I leave you. Do you love me... etc. Source: Copy belonging to Monsieur de Caumartin, a member of the illustrious family of judges and senior civil servants.
