Description
[CORSICA]. A History of the Revolutions on the Island of Corsica, and of the Accession of Theodore I to the Throne of that State, drawn from both secret and public memoirs. An account of the first Corsican revolution, which preceded the French Revolution by some sixty years, a very significant episode in the island’s history. The Hague, Pierre Paupie, 1738. Small 12mo (126 x 82 mm). Jansenist binding in full black morocco, double blind-stamped fillet framing the covers, ribbed spine decorated in the same style, title and date at the foot in gilt letters, gilt edges. Binding by Lobstein Laurenchet. 6 unnumbered pages, 324 pages. Frontispiece missing; rare signs of handling; on page 202, minor stains. First edition. The work is divided into two parts; the first is taken from ‘Istoria di Corsica’ by the Corsican historian Anton Pietro Filippini, nearly half of which deals with the War of Sampiero and the period from 1559 to 1582. The second part, anonymous, is devoted to the Corsican Revolution against Genoese rule, which had oppressed the island for nearly four centuries. It broke out in 1729 and is considered the first modern decolonisation movement after that of the United Provinces. In 1735, the insurgents declared Corsica free from Genoa, but without proclaiming full independence, still hoping for foreign protection. In 1736, the divided Corsicans welcomed the German adventurer Theodore von Neuhoff, who had himself crowned king under the name Theodore I. His short-lived reign (8 months) established a constitutional monarchy, governed by a parliament of 24 regional representatives, reflecting the Corsican desire to combine independence with political modernity. A very fine copy, beautifully bound by Lobstein Laurenchet.
