[BOTANY]. BRY (Johann Theodor de). Anthologia magna, sive Florilegium novum & absolutum, variorum maximeque rariorum Germinum, florum ac plantarum [...] First edition of one of the most famous botanical florilegia, illustrated with a beautiful frontispiece and 140 plates of specimens finely engraved on copper by the author, Johann Theodor de Bry (1561–1623). Frankfurt, printed by Bry, 1626. Quarto (200x295 mm), full brown speckled sheepskin, plain raised spine, speckled edges (contemporary binding). 6 unnumbered folios (including 1 title-frontispiece) and 140 plates engraved on copper by Johann Theodor de Bry, including 5 fold-outs. In Latin. Binding rubbed and worn, head and foot caps missing, loss at the top, water damage to the first unnumbered leaves, title slightly browned, some foxing or browning on the plates, mainly in the margins, tears with or without loss on two fold-out plates. Placement error for plates 29 to 32 (placed between Nos. 24 and 25) and for plate 76. First edition of this famous and important botanical collection of the period, based on the Florilegium novum published by the author in 1612. The illustrations consist of a frontispiece title page depicting a view of exotic trees within a beautiful architectural setting, and 140 fine plates (out of 142) engraved on copper by Johann Theodor de Bry (1561–1623), depicting numerous non-European plants as well as certain ‘monstrosities’ that were cultivated in Baroque gardens. The work opens with a Latin text describing sixteen exotic plants. The 140 plates are numbered from 1 to 22 and then from 1 to 116 (numbers 68, 68 and 111 were not used; Nos. 23, 37 and 50 are used twice) and two unnumbered plates at the end, including five fold-out plates. Pritzel 1299; Nissen BBI, 273; De Belder 92.
