Paris, Jean-Baptiste Coignard, 1673.

8 blank leaves - 329 [actual 325] pp. - 8 blank leaves - 1 blank leaf, a frontispiece title page and 65 engraved plates, including 9 double-page plates, 93 woodcut figures in the text.
Binding rubbed with several areas of leather missing (ribs, caps, corners in particular), a small gallery in the inner margin without affecting the text or plates on the first leaf on page 19, a few rare foxing spots, some of which have a small hole, a 9 cm tear on p. 279 affecting the plate, p. 149 slightly trimmed at the lower margin, some of the leaves slightly browned and occasionally some faint water stains at the margins.
A rare first edition of Claude Perrault’s (1613–1688) French translation of Vitruvius’s treatise on architecture, the only ancient treatise in this field to have survived into the modern era. Dedicated to Louis XIV and considered one of the finest editions, it was commissioned by Colbert from Charles Perrault’s brother, a physician and architect.
This complete copy is richly illustrated with 65 beautiful engraved plates, including 42 full-page plates, 14 within the text and 9 across two pages, as well as nearly 93 woodcut figures within the text. It also contains two rather remarkable copper-engraved headpieces, two initials and a footpiece. The frontispiece title page is the work of Gérard Scotin (1643–1715) after Sébastien Leclerc (1637–1714).
A very fine volume, with fresh interior pages and in its original binding.
