A rare copy of the first edition on Japanese paper, enhanced with 7 original etchings. The volume is beautifully presented in a fine Affolter binding.

Square quarto volume (172 x 220 mm) in Bradel style, half black morocco with corner caps, blind-stamped fillets on the covers, plain spine, author, title and date in full gold lettering, gilt headband. Covers and spine preserved. (Binding by Affolter).

Slight rubbing to spine and covers. Rare marginal foxing.
First edition of the definitive monograph on Rops, illustrated with a heliotype portrait of the artist, 25 intaglio-printed plates and approximately 150 compositions within the text or as full-page illustrations based on the etchings, drawings and sketches by Rops.
One of 100 copies on Japanese paper in the original format, with a double-state of the intaglio plates, a separate suite on Chinese paper of all the other illustrations, and two colour-printed plates, notably ‘Canicule’ and ‘Seule’. (No. 8).

Provenance: from the library of André Barrier (Paris 1870–1957) with his bookplate affixed to the inside front cover. Opposite is that of Jean Barrier. President of the Court of Appeal and a great bibliophile, André Barrier was president of the Cent Bibliophiles and a member of several other bibliophilic societies such as: Amis des Livres, Bibliophiles du Palais & Livre Contemporain.
