A sumptuous illustrated edition of *Manon Lescaut*, featuring autograph dedications and rare en-vives.

In-8 (250 x 170 mm). Pine-green morocco, spine with 5 raised bands, author, title, place and date in gold, decorated panels adorned with floral baskets, butterflies, cornucopias and scrolls within a double frame of gilt fillet, gilded dotted line, triple gilded fillet framing the covers, double gilded fillet on the edges, gilded edges, gilded lace, printed parchment cover preserved, box with edging [Binding by Pagnant].

A deluxe edition with a preface by Alexandre Dumas fils.
Limited edition of 333 copies, all of which are pre-print proofs: one of the 200 on Van Gelder paper (no. 13). Our copy is signed by the publishers on the flyleaf, with the owner’s name (name scratched out).
The illustrations include a portrait of Alexandre Dumas fils by Jules Jacquemard, based on Carpeaux’s bust, etched in etching; 11 etchings drawn and engraved by Léopold Flameng; and text decorations and a frontispiece by Emile Reiber, wood-engraved.
This copy is enriched with autograph documents and engraved plates from other illustrated editions published in the 1870s:
- a signed autograph letter by Alexandre Dumas fils, placed opposite his portrait, written in ink on letterhead bearing his address at 98 Avenue de Villiers (Paris);
- an autograph letter signed by the illustrator Edmond Hédouin, dated 18 July [18]83, in black ink. In-12 filled, 4 leaves, black ink on blue paper, mounted on white paper;
- The set of 6 etchings (including the portrait of Prévost) by the same HÉDOUIN for the edition of *Manon Lescaut* by Houssaye (Paris, Librairie des bibliophiles, 1874), in 2 or 3 states, including the portraits; one of the two states of the portrait is enhanced by a dedication from the artist signed in pencil (“à Jules Grenier”);
- The set of 9 etchings (including the portrait) by Louis MONZIÈS for the edition with a preface by Anatole France (Paris, Lemerre, 1878);
- The set of 3 etchings (including the portrait) by Adolphe LALAUZE and the facsimile of a letter by Prévost for the edition with a preface by Lescure (Paris, Quantin, 1879).
In addition, the copy includes one portrait of Prévost by Ficquet after F. Schmidt and one unsigned engraving.
A unique copy preserved in a signed binding, in excellent condition.
