A copy enhanced with a double set of the 81 watercolours by Charles Fouqueray, in an elegant Art Deco binding by René Kieffer.
Paris, René Kieffer, 1929.
Large quarto (250x330 mm), red morocco, geometric cold-stamped fillet decoration running across the entire binding, gilded and mosaic-patterned turquoise morocco composition evoking a water jet at the centre of the covers, wide inner border of the same morocco adorned with cold-stamped and gilded fillets, "René Kieffer" signature in the leather, canvas endpapers and linings with black and sky-blue decoration on a blue background, double endpapers, gilt head, illustrated covers and spine preserved, edged slipcase (René Kieffer).
228 pages, 81 colour watercolours by Charles Fouqueray, including 8 plates.
Minor rubbing on the bands and in one corner, slight wear to the slipcase.
A splendid edition of this great maritime novel by Maurice Larrouy (1882–1932), recounting the merciless confrontation between a sailor and his captain in the icy waters of the English Channel, illustrated with 81 colour watercolours by Charles Fouqueray (1869–1956), a French painter and illustrator with a passion for maritime life.
Limited edition of 300 copies on white laid paper, this being No. 7, enhanced with a separate double suite in black and colour.
Binder’s label on the first white endpaper.
A lovely Art Deco design, typical of the work of René Kieffer (1876–1963).
