Description
VERLAINE (Paul). GUÉRIN (Charles). Fêtes galantes. With thirty-one original lithographs by Charles Guérin. A remarkable copy of Fêtes galantes, bound in fine grey morocco by Charles Lanoë, decorated with floral compositions painted by the painter and decorator Georges Baudin (1882–1960). Paris, published by R. Helleu, 1919. One volume, in-8 (255x190mm). Grey morocco, covers adorned with large inlaid leather panels, featuring floral motifs stamped in gold and painted in delicate shades of blue and pink. The design on the front cover is signed by the decorator Georges Baudin in the bottom right-hand corner. Spined back, gilt edges, interior endpapers decorated with a gold fillet. Lining and endpapers in dark pink moiré satin. Edged slipcase. Binding signed by Charles LANOË. 78 pages. Spine slightly discoloured. Illustrated edition featuring thirty-one original lithographs by Charles Guérin, including one frontispiece and thirty full-page compositions, accompanied by wood-engraved ornaments by Jules Germain. Limited edition of 335 numbered and initialled copies, this one being one of 254 on vellum. A painter and engraver, pupil of Gustave Moreau and co-founder of the Salon d’Automne, Charles Guérin (1875–1939) moves away here from academic rigour to embrace the melancholy of Les Fêtes galantes. His style, characterised by supple lines and a dreamy atmosphere, lends itself perfectly to Verlaine’s world: the parks of Versailles and the banter of the characters from the Commedia dell’arte. Provenance: Robert Beauvillain, with an ex-libris engraved by Charles Jouas.
