A rare first edition of this portrait of the city of Florence, which Alexandre Dumas discovered during a trip in 1835. Beginning in Marseille, the narrative continues with Dumas’s stay in Toulon, followed by the journey that took him to Florence, of which Dumas provides a veritable historical panorama in the second part of his book, describing the city’s main monuments, from the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore to Orsanmichele, via the Medici Palace, the Palazzo Vecchio and the Piazza della Signoria, and painting a portrait of the legendary figures of Dante Alighieri, Cosimo the Elder de’ Medici and the Dominican monk Savonarola.
Dr André Chauveau’s bookplate on the inside front cover, stamp of Laurent Pichat’s library on the half-title page.
[Vicaire, III, 352–353].
A very fine copy, attractively presented.
