Description
[MANUSCRIPT] - BEER (Jean, de). Tombeau de Jean Giraudoux. A unique combination of the handwritten draft and the signed first edition. Paris, Jean Vigneau, 1946. In-8 volume (280 x 190 mm). Paperback, printed cream cover. Illustrated with 4 compositions by Douking. 59 pp. First edition, one of 200 non-commercial copies. An exceptional copy, enhanced by a beautiful autographed dedication from the author to his friends: ‘For Anne-Marie and Jean, [...] a further token of a friendship and affection that is faithful and unbroken. Jean de Beer. April 1947. ” Attached to this copy is the ORIGINAL AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT entitled: “Les Portes du ciel. Hommage à Jean Giraudoux”. 30 pages in-8 (210 x 135 mm) in loose sheets. Full text written in pencil, signed and dated 5 February 1944. It features numerous crossings-out and corrections, revealing the work’s genesis. A poignant literary testimony: Written just five days after the death of Jean Giraudoux (29 October 1882 – 31 January 1944), this “Dialogue of the Dead” imagines the playwright’s entry into the afterlife, welcomed by his own creations: Ulysses, Electra, Helen, Alcmene and Judith. Jean de Beer offers here a unique eulogy, in which the mythical characters surround their creator as he enters this ‘unfading light’. This first draft manuscript, resonating with the recent loss of the master, constitutes an exceptional literary and historical testimony to the bonds that united the playwrights of that generation.
