Description
BASTIA (Georges). ‘The Zoo of the Stars’. A series of 20 signed original gouaches depicting humorous, anthropomorphic portraits of the greatest celebrities of the 1950s: Brigitte Bardot, Jean Gabin, Édith Piaf, Georges Brassens, Louis de Funès, Juliette Gréco, Fernandel, Maurice Chevalier, and many others. No place, no publisher, [circa 1950]. Folio-sized volume (330 x 250 mm), loose sheets in a half-cloth folder with ribbon ties. 2 flyleaves + 20 plates (complete set). Small tear at the top edge. Created entirely in gouache on cream-coloured vellum paper, these works should not be confused with prints or enhanced engravings. Georges Bastia (1904–1980), a caricaturist and illustrator of comic songs, was a member of the humorists’ society and contributed notably to *Le Rire*, *L’Auto* (winner of the competition in 1920), *La Rampe*, *Fantasio* and *Opéra*. From 1936 onwards, he launched a highly successful series transforming artists into animals. Marcel Achard, in his preface, describes him as a ‘great champion of caricature’ and the ‘Buffon of caricature’. In excellent condition.
