Description
PARUTA (Paolo). *Historia Vinetiana* by Paolo Paruta, Knight and Procurator of St Mark’s, divided into two parts; this edition is enriched with marginal notes and a table of contents for each book. Part Two, comprising three books, covering the war waged by the League of Christian Princes against the Ottoman Sultan Selim over the Kingdom of Cyprus. A reference work on the history of Venice and the War of Cyprus (1570–1573), a conflict between the Republic of Venice and the Ottoman Empire. Venice, published by the heirs of Tomaso Giunti and Francesco Baba, 1645. 2 parts in 1 quarto volume (263 x 188 mm). Full grained tan calfskin, double fillet edging on the covers, ribbed spine decorated with a mosaic panel and gilt metal fittings. Contemporary binding. In Italian, old spelling, 2 unnumbered folios, 596 pp., 15 unnumbered folios of index; 232 pp. and 8 folios of index. Significant restoration to the headbands, clasps and edges; the title label replaced during restoration. Interior fresh and clean. New edition following the original, published posthumously in 1605. Title page adorned with the author’s portrait engraved in intaglio. This fine edition, printed in Venice by the Giunta family in two quarto volumes, each with its own title page and pagination, is supplemented by notes in the margins; it contains the two principal works of Paolo Paruta, a historian born in Venice in 1540, historiographer of the Republic, senator, and finally Procurator of St Mark’s, who died in 1598. The Historia Vinetiana (1605) is a continuation of Pietro Bembo’s historical work, the Historia Veneta. In it, Paruta recounts the history of the Republic of Venice, covering events from the late 15th century to the early 16th century, notably the Wars of the League of Cambrai and other major conflicts involving Venice. The work focuses on the political, military and economic challenges faced by the Republic, whilst highlighting the diplomatic skill of its leaders. In *Historia della Guerra di Cipro, libri tre* (1572), Paruta details the causes of the conflict, military strategies, naval battles — notably the Battle of Lepanto (1571) — as well as the negotiations that followed. See: Treccani Encyclopaedia; Historians of Venice (Cambridge University Press, 2010). Provenance: B. H. de Fourcy, with heraldic bookplate. A rare volume, in good condition.
