Description
BALZAC (Honoré de), LYNCH (Albert). Father Goriot. Scenes from Parisian Life. A fine copy enhanced by a lovely original drawing signed by F. Bourdin, carefully executed in watercolour on the half-title page. Paris, A. Quantin, ‘Les Chefs-d’œuvre du roman contemporain’ series, 1885. Quarto volume (290 × 220 mm), full dark green morocco, ribbed spine, compartments richly decorated with flowers and foliage in small gilt filigree, fillet framing on the covers with a composition of flowers, foliage, fillets and small insects in gilt filigree at the corners, gilt edges on endpapers. Binding signed Vieuxmaire. 310 pages. Spine slightly discoloured. Upper cap slightly rubbed. A deluxe ‘large-format’ edition of 100 numbered copies on Japanese paper, featuring a set of engravings in the style of the early 19th century (no. 14). A painter and illustrator of Peruvian origin, born in Lima or Trujillo depending on the source, Albert Lynch trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris around 1870 under Henri Lehmann and Jules Noël. From 1877 onwards, he exhibited at the Salon and specialised in elegant portraits of women from the Belle Époque. The illustrations for *Le Père Goriot*, commissioned by Quantin, are among his most representative contributions to naturalist literary illustration. A fine copy in excellent condition.
