Description
GRANDVILLE (Jean-Ignace-Isidore Gérard, known as). Another World. Grandville’s undisputed masterpiece, preserved in a very rare contemporary publisher’s binding. Paris, H. Fournier, 1844. Small quarto volume (260 x 195 mm). Publisher’s binding in embossed navy blue percaline. Covers adorned with a large romantic design comprising fillets and cold-stamped corner fleurons, with a large gilt plate in the centre. Smooth spine richly decorated with gilt lettering. All edges gilt. 1 half-leaf of half-title (justificatif), 1 half-leaf of title, 295 pp., and 36 plates. Minor signs of wear to the percaline, three corners slightly pitted, a discreet repair at the top of the first spine (approx. 2 cm). Rare and light foxing. First edition and first printing of this astonishing and visionary work, considered the artistic pinnacle of Grandville’s career. Whilst the public of 1844 was baffled by what contemporaries described as ‘incoherence and madness’, the Surrealists would later hail this work as the creation of a genius pioneer. The illustrations in the first edition include a frontispiece, 36 magnificent woodcuts as inserts, finely coloured at the time, as well as 146 woodcut compositions within the text and full-page black-and-white plates. The half-title, colophon and title pages are printed in red. The printing was carefully executed on the mechanical presses of Fournier et Cie. A precious and beautiful copy, in fresh condition, preserved in its very rare original cardboard binding.
