Description
HUGO (Victor). Acts and Words. The complete trilogy in three volumes: Before Exile (1841–1851), During Exile (1852–1870), Since Exile (1870–1876). Victor Hugo’s principal political writings brought together for the first time in three volumes in a fine signed binding. Paris, Michel Lévy Frères, 1875. 3 volumes in-8 (256 x 170 mm). Black half-maroquin with corner caps, ribbed spine decorated with interlaced panels, gilt head. Binding signed E. & A. Maylander. Wide margins, 516 pp.; xlviii, 474 pp.; xliv, 354 pp. The first volume is missing a fragment of the headband. Scuffing at the top of the first clamps. Two corners of the cover pierced. First edition. A rare copy from the limited first edition of 100 numbered copies, this one being one of 80 printed on Holland paper. The copy presented here bears the number 79, printed on Holland paper (80 copies on Holland paper, 20 on Chinese paper). A collection of Victor Hugo’s political speeches and addresses covering three periods: the Académie Française and the Chamber of Peers (1841–1848), the years of exile in Guernsey and Jersey, and his return to France following the fall of Napoleon III. The first volume opens with ‘Le Droit et la Loi’, a text which ‘forms, in a sense, the preface to this life marked by so many events, and serves as an introduction to the three volumes’ (see publisher’s note). In 1885, a fourth volume covering the period 1876–1885 was published; this volume is missing. A fine bound copy of the rare Dutch edition.
